Balancing Tradition and Innovation in Agriculture
Early Morning Musings on Farming in the Age of Advancement
It’s 05:30 in the morning.
You’re awake - almost ready for the day.
And hey, you’re alive and breathing.
There’s a lot on your mind.
Agriculture.
Not for the faint hearted.
There’s a lot going on.
Awake, in an age of ever-advancing innovation...
All of humanity on a high-growth, fast-paced flight path.
New territory born from new technology, each and every day.
You realise, we’re living in a time of undeniable growth in two main arenas:
The physical, and
The digital.
And we are constantly being jostled around by the impact-rich interplay between these two arenas. Traditions, and modernity.
Advancements that flow like water.
With ripple effects we cannot even start to fathom…
Tools like Artificial Intelligence and systems automation are here to stay. You notice that solutions and sectors come with all the “Tech” suffixes and fancy #hashtags one can think of nowadays. AgTech, being one of them.
But how far will this take us?
All of this is enough to make your head spin.
You think to yourself, “Where can I make the biggest impact for the best return… and maybe some tangible benefits for the human race?”
And, “How is this possible, all while being mindful of the bounds of ethics, social norms, and everyone’s expectations?” (Perhaps questions for another day).
But you do acknowledge to yourself that there is advancement in the air, and you can really feel it.
A push… then a pull. Another push.
(we can feel it alright! - especially the old guard).
Either we embrace the tech we can use right now - the new-age tools and tricks - or we will simply get left behind.
If we don’t, then one way or another, quickly, or over time… we will eventually fall short (for more than a season) on the increasingly bullish production goals, our potential, our obligations, and promises.
"Change is the process by which the future invades our lives, and it is important to look at it, to understand it, and to respond to it with awe and wonder." - Alvin Toffler
